Torn between three stars and four, and well aware that Amazon rates three stars as 'critical'. First the praise. This is a readable, comprehensive and persuasive assessment of risks facing current society. It draws heavily on current and projected science and technology. My disappointments are (i) its prescriptions are platitudinous and (ii) the author ventures way outside his area of very considerable expertise. I have no reason to doubt that his writing is well informed, but it seems to waste his expertise. This could have been undertaken equally well by an allround scientific journalist. Rees wrote a true masterpiece of popular science "Just Six Numbers" in which his field of expertise is superbly explained to the lay reader. If he wanted to venture again into popular science, concentration on his own field would have been much more productive.

Buy it. This is a thoughtful, balanced, riveting, easy-to-read book. I saw Martin Rees on WTTW's Chicago Tonight (the best thing on television in Chicago each weeknight at 7pm) and thought I'd have a look at his book. I couldn't put it down - very interesting.

This book is typical of an apocalyptic and pessimistic tendency in western culture. I feel like I am trapped in a hospital room with another patient constantly talking about how we are going to probably die from pneumonia or a virus or from the non-organic hospital food. The interesting discussions in the astronomy section, his science, are not worth the ride, and would have made a better book. Millions of us may die of a pandemic, a terrorist may set off a nuclear bomb in Times square, and I may get run over tomorrow cutting across the street in Prague. You cannot deal with tomorrow by living in fear today.

I was frankly appalled by the lack of research or insight that went into writing this book, which is essentially an extended essay. You can envision Rees settling into an aimchair with his laptop to rattle off some things on his mind, and decided to call it a book. Most of the text isn't even about "the future" or "prospects," it's just a description of the status quo in certain areas of relevance to the future - to the point that the discussion of the future is squeezed to insignificance. In areas where I have expertise I can see how basic his thinking is, just talking about things off the top of his head that he's picked up along the way, but aren't based on much beyond general reading. The only areas of some interest are those where he, as an astronomer, has expertise.

You too could be master of a Cambridge College, President of the Royal Society, and a peer of the realm, if you had the superb intelligence, extraordinarily wide knowledge and interests, and the profound humanity of Martin Rees. For the rest of us, we can attempt to make up for our deficiencies by readings his books - especially the latest - On the Future: Prospects for Humanity.

On The Future contains more well-informed opinion, more wisdom and more stimulating ideas than any other book I have read about the future waiting for our children and grandchildren. I gave copies to each of my grandchildren because I want them to understand and ponder the opportunities and dangers ahead. I gobbled this one up right away and will probably read it again. Rees is a good writer and he clearly knows the material. I'd have liked more details about potential catastrophes and more discussion of "what if" scenarios, but for a general audience, this was interesting.

Excellent read.This book contains two different writing styles, both boasting an admirable command of the English language. The first parades more of an artistic personality and the other displays a bit more the training of an intellectual and free thinker. They are two books in one, the first half is written by Asifa, and the second by her fantastic companion, David.Asifa and David were thirsty for an adventure, consequently they joined the Peace Corps (PC), and page by page they lead us through their journey. In the comfort of my air conditioned and while lapping at my Colombian coffee I laugh, wonder, worry, and learn, alongside them, through the magic of the leaves of their book.Asifa learned that these â€œnew relativesâ€ that she just met wash their behinds with their left hand, therefore, they only eat with their right . . . but, she â€œhas seen those left hands come up to help the right hand from time to time.â€David feels that Chronic beerlessness is a serious problem in the village, leading to weight loss and a disturbing clarity of mind. And, apparently, while in Mali, David, instead of dreaming of fame and fortune he dreamt of clean horizontal surfaces.After reading this book I am so glad that I am not a woman, specially a woman giving birth in Mali, because : â€œ . . . as she nonchalantly grabbed a pair of surgical scissors and just snipped the vagina of the birthing mother. No anesthetic, no antiseptic, no warning. . .â€

My husband and I both could not put this book down. When Asifa's delightful stories about her experiences as a senior in the Peace Corps came to an end, we could not wait to read David's.I thought Asifa did a masterful job of describing both her surroundings and her own reactions to them. I could feel her frustration as she dealt with the problems of rural and even urban Mali. David's writing was more of a practical explanation of what was going on, but it drew us into his feelings as well. Having these two different sets of insight about what was going on gave a much fuller picture than one would have done by itself.An excellent look at today's Peace Corps and how two older Americans worked within it.

Ever think about what it would be like to join the Peace Corp? Well, this is your chance to share Asifa's adventures but stay comfy and cosy in your favorite armchair. The author brought to life the adventure, cultural experiences and at times potential danger of living in a foreign country. She shared her struggle to learn the language, culture and how to navigate the everyday necessities of life -- food, water, cooking, bathroom....wait a minute, what bathroom? It's certainly not our understanding of the necessities of life. The tales of travel hardships, the colorful characters she met and the people she helped gave this book a vividness I enjoyed very much and helped me to understand how much the people of Peace Corp are giving to the world.

This is a wonderful book. Asifa and David tell the story of their choice to join the Peace Corps and serve in Mali, West Africa with great heart and humor. At an age when many are preparing for retirement, this couple joins young volunteers in one of the poorest countries in the world. But they discover a kind of wealth as they struggle to find a means of being of service in a way that really matters. Along the way, they encouonter fascinating people, elaborate greeting rituals, joking cousins, and ultimately friends and family. And did I mention the dust and the heat? The picture of Asifa brooming the dust out the apartment daily and David riding his bike to work under a 120 degree sky remain emblazened in my brain. I am just left, however, with a feeling of immense gratitude for getting to know Mali and Malians.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I'm packing for Peace Corps The Gambia and although it's not the same country, it is comforting reading stories from RPCVs and the journey they went through. Before reading this Mali wasn't a country on my to visit list and now it's one that I look forward to visiting hopefully in the near future.

Wonderful story about a couple's time in the Peace Corps in West Africa. Well written with a glimpse into what it's like to be thrown into a completely different set of circumstances while trying to make a difference in people's lives. Very interesting and hard to put down. Thank you Asifa and David!

The story of a Peace Corp adventure in Mali taken by an upper-middle-age couple. Their honesty--about themselves--as they tell their story, and the sometimes humorous learning experiences made this book difficult to put down! I learned of another culture in a most enjoyable way.

I learned so much about the Peace Corps and so enjoyed the humor mixed in with all of their experiences. Wonderful writers, great that there are also photos throughout the book.

Simply wonderful. I work at Winterthur Museum which is sometimes/often said to be the home of the world's foremost collection of American antiques. Guides were impassioned in their love for this book as it explained in great & wonderful detail everything that wonderful Winterthur is all about.AND it has broad appeal. Knowing that my engineer spouse would find some fascination in it I plugged it into the car's CD player when we were locked in its embrace for 8 hours...& he loved it. We talked about finer points raised in the book endlessly & thoroughly enjoyed both the book & what would ordinarily be a painfully boring trip we know all too well.For our next road trip I've got Bryson's book on 1927....I am just hoping he doesn't read it himself as he isn't the best representative of his own work. If you accept his Iowan birth, he comes across as stuffy & pretentious because of his diction which is full of British overtones having lived there so long. If you accept him as a citizen of the world, he can't honestly represent Des Moines. He should just shut up & write - a lot!

LOVE THIS BOOK! I enjoyed every single page! It's a big book and took me forever because I only had time for several pages each time I picked it up. Learned SO much about the history of homes and of England. I even learned that Christopher Columbus didn't discover North America. I always enjoy a Bill Bryson book. He's an amazing author and has a wonderful way with words. I recommend any of his books. If you want to discover where people used to sleep, the origins of glass, how people lived...you can discover all that and more in these pages.

This is the year I have become a big fan of Bill Bryson! The reporter who was born in Iowa and lived a good portion of his life in Great Britain is a wonderful tour guide to the mundane realities of life and science. In At Home he invites us into the Victorian vicarage where he lived for many years. We tour the home exploring each room such as the bathroom, bedroom, garden, dining room, cellar etc. We learn all about furniture, food consumption, clothing, crops, tea, salt, pepper and many other fascinating subjects. He traces the growth of industry and technology as the industrial revolution is examined. We learn much about how people in the past had to deal with disease, death, childbirth, education and existing from day to day. The past was a different country where life was often hard, brutal and short. Bryson is a man of erudition and wit who takes us into how ordinary people have lived in the past. This is a long book which is a great way to learn history and science in a painless way. Bill Bryson is a national treasure and you cannot go wrong in reading any of his books; this book published in 2010 is a gem!

I am really enjoying this book though I find I am forgetting what I've read almost as soon as I have read it! That is because there is SO much information in here! I enjoy Mr. Brysons writing, it is like listening to a charming and well read friend. If ind I prefer to own his books (rather than borrow from the library) so that I can jump in and out of the conversation or refer back to them. This one in particular is crammed full of the intriguing histories of all sorts of unnoticed daily spaces and objects. I feel as if I know my ancestors better after reading and therefore know myself a bit more. Quite a nice book if you like this sort of thing!

Bill Bryson never disappoints and this book is no exception. I read it several years ago, recommending it to everyone I knew. Such fascinating material for him to work with and he works with all material so well. When I saw it was available in an audio book I decided to buy it for an upcoming drive from Florida to New England. We enjoyed it very much. Nothing personal to the author but I know he's an American so I did find his British "ness" terminology a bit annoying. Having lived overseas for many years and knowing many people taught in British English, I full well know how easy it is to pick up their interesting terminology, still I found it somewhat difficult to put up with coming from a mostly American accent. . Overall though I enjoyed the audio version and I recommend it and the book itself highly.

The story is a page turner, but Graysmith is obviously not a writer. He jumps from 1st person to 3rd person and back and forth without warning. There are times where you find yourself losing track of where you are while you're reading this. His writing proves to be disorganized, jumbling and rambles on. Midway into this intriguing story, I found myself skipping to the end. His research on Zodiac is evident and thorough, and commendable, but even he admits Zodiac was an obsession of his.Overall, the topic is what sold this story to publishers, because it certainly wasn't his writing. Graysmith should have stuck to cartoons. The writing didn't impress me.

Iâ€™m still pretty earlier into the chapters but thereâ€™s a ton of information in this book that paints a picture of the possible perpetrator that I had no clue about. Granted Iâ€™ve not read a ton of books about this case but Iâ€™ve seen quite a few documentaries and didnâ€™t see in any of them such solid leads that paint a picture of someone who is not perhaps as smart as originally thought, who may have gotten inspiration from a movie, who was almost certainly in the military (I knew this one was a possibility but didnâ€™t realize itâ€™s all but confirmed by his boot prints)...as a therapist Iâ€™m very interested in understand human behavior and this book is giving me a much clearer picture of who this fiend was and what made him tick. I hope with the new advances in genetic genealogy being used in law enforcement they will finally be able to give him a name whether or not heâ€™s still alive...

I bought this book for a book report paper I needed to write for college. I loved the Zodiac film by David Fincher, and this was written by Robert Greysmith, who was a consultant on the film. Great story full of suspense and still is an unsolved case in the San Francisco area.

A must for any true crime reader, the author Robert Graysmith's research in to the zodiac murders is thorough and gives the reader an infomative insight in to these truly baffling and shocking crimes.

Watched the feature film and was intrigued by the story so I bought this and the followup book making the case against the prime suspect who,will sadly never stand trial.Too bad the various departments involved couldnt cooperate and share information.Might have solved this years ago.I share a birthday and the ability to write with either hand with Arthur Lee Allen.Creepy.

After watching the film I decided to read the book by Graysmith and I'm glad I did. It's meticulously laid out, with more details that can be given in a film, even one that is 2.5 hours.

I bought this book after seeing the movie, hoping it would clear up a few things that were glossed over in the movie. But even after reading the book twice, I still have more questions than answers. One thing is quite clear, that Mr. Graysmith has decided who the real Zodiac is, and only presents the facts that support his finding. Personally, I would have preferred to be presented with more of the facts, so I can make up my own mind. It's true what others have said, about the book being not very well written. It's clumsy and hard to follow at times, and all the name changes definitely don't help matters. But even with all that, it's gripping and hard to put down. I finished it in two sittings the first time through. I think before I spend any money on "Zodiac Unmasked", I'll look for it in the library. I have a hunch I should have bought that one and not this one, anyway.

Because I like true crime, I'd wanted to read this book for a long time. The author made it tough sledding. I can't say how I would have fixed this book structurally; the author presented it chronologically. Perhaps I'd have advised him to concentrate more on the murders that are definitely attributable to the Zodiac and spent less time following up on blind alleys. Unfortunately the story didn't build to a climax because there was none. Rather, the book meandered. Also, it suffered from a profound lack of character development. The author was a major player in the story, but he managed to nearly bury himself. What were his motives in spending years pursuing this story? What did the cops in the various jurisdictions think of him? What impact did his obsession have on his personal life? He shares none of this with the reader.

Had heard good things about this but it was too "light" for my taste. I expected a deeper read that had more forensic detail. It read like a fluffy People magazine (expanded) article.

I wasn't sure if this book taught you how to carve katchinas out of wood so I took a chance. It doesn't. It is simply a booklet with 3 paper dolls for you to cut out and glue together. It would make a nice elementary school social studies project.
