I wasn't sure how this was going to be because how much more can you learn about one topic when he's written so many books on it. However, in this book he focuses on defining more deeply love languages and communication. He also delves into conflicts, negative emotions, and resolving them. Afterwards he steps into three basic needs - love, respect, appreciation - and then focuses on types of intimacy - physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual. I found it to be helpful and interesting
Okay so... First of, I'm not Christian, but my husband is. I'm definitely open and receptive to any positive message, and have read books with a religious slant in the past I thought were great, so I thought I'd give this book a try. It does have some good points, but boy oh boy do you really have to sit through some condescending balogna to get to the point!! Understanding that technically this was written for a different audience aside, the meat of the lessons are buried beneath pages of repetitive tripe that basically serves only to point out how "non-Christians couldn't possibly understand" or how lucky Christians are to magically have this superior ability to know what it is to serve others that those poor thick-headed non-Christians simply don't have the capacity for, silly reprobates! Some of the ideas can also come off a litte sexist and old fashioned, but I think mostly are relative to the time the book was written. Outside of that, a lot of the ideas have merit, and I found myself highliting many sections and passages. The concepts that I did try to incorporate in my marriage were very successful. Honestly, just reading a book about communicating better started a great dialogue between us. I would recommend with the above warnings to skim past the junk.
I do not write my headline statement lightly. It took about three weeks to finish Mr. Chapman's book, but every page was well worth it. Gary fills each page not with theory, but with facts and practical tools we need to strengthen our marriage. I have read several books on marriage so far, but this one was authentic and applicable.Thanks Gary!
Chapman has done it again with solid marriage advice from a Christian worldview. I enjoyed the end of each chapter with the questions and actions he gives for couples to take their learning and communicating with each other to the next level.
Excellent book. Chapman's books are always great. Very well written. Lots of good advice on how to communicate with your spouse, Many good examples.
Great book. We use it in our small group meetings. The price is lower than many places we have looked. This is also available on Kindle
Gary Chapman repeats his honest and Scriptural approach to guiding couples to having more fulfilling relationships. This is a must read whether your relationship is in prime condition or barely hanging on.
I've been married for 48 years and this book helped me understand marriage and communications like I had never known before.
