This book was a wonderful surprise. Extremely well-written, and a very unusual storyline. The story is driven by dialogue, with just the right amount of colloquialism to authenticate. The character development is incredible. Monsters, ghosts, and prejudices (both of classes and races) are the mint in mint juleps. The "monsters" are as complicated as the waterways in this Southern lowland. This edition is the combined efforts of the original installments, and although there's a lot to read... I had so much trouble putting it down. The family dynasty will suck you in, just as the blackwater will. I'd love to go into detail; but this is too good of a story for a spoiler. I'll be reading this one again!

I loved this book. A hypnotically labyrinthine tale wonderfully told. I'm not even a fan of the genre but I couldn't put it down. Somebody really should adapt it as a limited series for Netflix or Amazon Prime or one of the premium TV channels.If you like the feeling of confidence you get when you're in the hands of a writer who knows how to tell a story, you'll love it too.
Took a break from Stephen King to read this. If you want to be up long nights reading, this is the book to get. It was one of those that I couldn't put down. Shirley Jackson fans, check this out. Reminded me a great deal of her writing.
This is an epic tale full of characters you will most likely miss when they meet their end. Those that survive leaving you wanting more. The horror is quiet most of the novel, but brutal when it happens. I miss The Casket family and I only finished the book a few minutes ago. If I had the time and money, the cast and crew...I would devote my days to making this a mini series.
I'd love to see this as an Amazon Original series. I like that the characters are vivid and flawed, with often inscrutable motivations. I like that the focus is on the family members that live in the three mansions on the river, and that the monster seems like just another part of the story rather than the entire focus. And I like that everything takes place in and around the town of Perdido on a mysterious river in the deep south, so that you only see events like the war and the great depression through the experiences of its inhabitants.I've read this book three times in my life. With each subsequent read, enough time had passed that I didn't remember details, so I enjoyed it all over again, finishing it within days because I couldn't seem to put it down. It's hard to describe what I love so much about this book. It's not particularly scary. It's not exactly action-packed. None of the characters are specifically loveable/hateable (OK, there is one person you can despise, and it's not the monster). Yet each time I finish the book, it stays on my mind for days. I'll definitely read it again in another 10-15 years.
This should be required reading for all fans of horror fiction. Michael McDowell was amazingly versatile and this is his Southern Gothic masterpiece of swamp horror It was nearly impossible to track down the 6 volumes of the previous edition, so when I realized that this omnibus was about to be released, I was giddy. This should be your beach read this summer.

I first got into Michael McDowell’s writing with The Elementals, and he continues to impress me with every book of his that I read.I knew that this book is considered his magnum opus, but I still wasn’t prepared for how marvelously epic this story is.Blackwater chronicles the lives of one family over nearly a century. It mixes southern gothic with family saga, mixes monsters with haunted houses, and ultimately examines human and not-so-human nature.I laughed, I cried, I slept with the lights on.
