Easy read, good tips
This book is filled with vital information to help my son with college admission.
The book is very helpful but arrived with a damaged cover when bought as "new". Makes me uncomfortable that this is a gift for someone and I had to present it damaged. The information inside is very good though.
The Princeton Review (not related to Princeton University) publishes a slew of college-hopping books each year, none better than "The ___ Best Colleges" (the 2019 edition of which, collecting "The Best 384 Colleges", will be out in early August). Now comes this new publication, attempting to provide the most basic information about the college admission process."College Admission 101: Simple Answers to Tough Questions About College Admission and Financial Aid" (2018 publication; 204 pages) is a well-organized book that addresses the absolute most basic questions and issues an high school student may have. How do you know when a college is a good fit for you? "Cultural fit" is just one factor, but oh so important (as I learned the hard way--my oldest ended up in a college whose culture turned out to be 180 degrees apart; my oldest left that school after just one semester). Should you take the sat or ACT more than once? If so, which scores will colleges see: all of them, or just the highest? (Answer: it depends on the particular college.) Is it better to have a B grade in an honors/AP class than an A in a regular/easier course? (Answer: ALWAYS go with the honors/AP class.) Will you be penalized if you apply for financial aid? (Answer: sometimes.) Do admission officers look at your social media accounts? (Answer: YES.) And on and on. The book is chock-full of "Survey Says" reports (as is the case in other Princeton Review publications), which are quite helpful. Please note that, even though this is listed as being about 200 pages, in reality it is closer to 160 pages when you take away the "Appendix" and the "Index" at the very end of the book.Bottom line: this book is likely quite insightful for any high school kid who is at the very, very beginning of the college-shopping process, as well as the parent who is facing the process for the first time. I've gone through it twice, and it is amazing how ignorant I was about so many things the first time around, so in a sense my oldest and I were on a learning curve together, which frankly benefited my youngest quite a bit. "College Admissions 101" is written in an easy-going style, addressing seemingly obvious questions (for those of us who have gone through it) in a direct and easy to grasp manner. If you are in HS and at the very beginning of the college admission process (or a parent going through it for the first time), this book is for YOU.
My twins are only freshmen, but I appreciate this book as it will give them a guide to what to look for and to prepare for while they are in school. With so many different issues that are out there, this is a guide that we will turn to for guidance (not necessarily answers) when we are thinking about something that might affect their chances to get into college. This book is helpful, easy to read and definitely sheds light on the whole issue of applying for college. I wish I had this when I went to college. I remember we struggled through every step of the way. I know things are different now, but this will help us get through this maze in the next few years.Definitely would recommend this for all parents.
This book would have been an amazing resource when I was applying to college -- 20 years ago! The information is all helpful, relevant and very well organized with short, easy to comprehend answers to pretty much any question you might have about the application process. Specific questions/information was easy to look up and find and the flow of the narrative or information is intuitive, such that where the answer to your question might spawn another question, bam, there's the answer. This would be a worthwhile read for any family looking to navigate the sometimes complicated process of college application and for those families and students who are looking at getting a head start to the application process.
College Admission 101.As a parent with a few who will possibly heading down this road soon I found this book to be a good place to start.I say possibly because there are other options out there to college like a trade school that I am totally fine if any of my kids decide they want to go that route instead.I will have more than one child going through at the same time so it has been more overwhelming for me than I though possible. Some might think easier if many going at once but it is three times EVERYTHING.Now there are a few other online resources that have been a huge help in addition to this book.Such as GrownandFlown along with Road2College and many others. This book though does give a great start to things that you will need to do to help you along the way to prepare you along the way.College has changed so much over the past 20 even 10 years really and is honestly never too early to at least start a foundation of knowing what you will need to do.This book has helped my teens to understand a little more about what we are facing along this journey.
If you're a parent or student just beginning the college search process, this book is a good place to start. It's well-organized and touches on all of the important considerations in the admissions process, from structuring your high school curriculum and activities, to identifying the best school fit, to taking the entrance exams, to preparing the all-important applications. It also includes some comforting quotes and observations from those who have recently been through the admissions process, which may help reduce the stress level for parents and students. For me, the most valuable aspect of the book is the recommended timeline, which allows you to see the big picture of the process and begin planning for your college visits, teacher recommendations, SAT/ACT exams, college essay drafting, etc. in a way that ensures it will all come together for you. I also like how the book cites external sources of information so that you can delve deeper in your research.
