Kurt, a National Park Ranger with an overbearing and glory seeking boss, constantly finds himself involved in major crimes that don’t really fit his job description. Working with his girlfriend, a coroner’s assistant, and some other friends, on his own time until he can find an angle that appeals to his boss, Kurt is fast gaining the respect of the local law enforcement community. In the latest adventure, based loosely on the bridge collapse at Florida International University Kurt gets involved when he comes upon the scene while taking his daughter back to his ex-wife’s house. Mr. Becker skillfully weaves the emotions of all parties involved into a tight story line that never slows down. We get a ringside seat to Kurt’s thought processes as he works at solving what really happened as too many things just don’t add up. Accident? Poor Workmanship? Sabotage? Or maybe Murder? Ride along with Kurt and find out.Backwater Pass is by far the best installment in a series that has never disappointed me as a reader. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves a good, tight mystery with great character development. Be warned however that it is extremely difficult to put down and you may find yourself still reading when the sun is coming up.

As a further disclaimer, I teach at Florida International University, whose pedestrian bridge collapse figures centrally in this story. I also used to be a SCUBA instructor, and there's a lot of diving in this one. Finally, I've lived in South Florida for over 30 years and am familiar with so many of the locations in this book.Beyond all of that, this is definitely one of my favorite of the Kurt Hunter Mysteries. I don't want to go a lot deeper into the meat of the book -- you need to read it for that. Suffice it to say, it's great!
I've read most of your books and find them just great; however, this one, to me, had too many explanations. The process of placing the buoys, the description of the highways around the area and the overall description of the island in the keys. Maybe it's because it's because I was stationed in Key West about the time Castro took over Cuba and many of the names are familiar to me. I was curious however about how used used "Boca Chita" vice "Boca Chica" as that's where the Naval Air Station is located. Keep writing and I'll keep reading.
Great latest and greatest in the series or as a stand alone. I don't want to give up the plot. The characters are more "fleshed out" and have become "real." A truly believable story in and about Florida and Floridians. I'm hoping that some producer will glom onto this and produce a series for TV. Treasure, diving, boating, quirky characters, great plot and believable outcomes - who could ask for anything more. The only way you'll enjoy it more is if you start at the beginning of the series and read them all.
Kurt's deepening relationships with his daughter and his girlfriend are woven into a fast paced mystery. The plot has everything you could ask for action, romance and danger set in the beauty that is Biscayne Bay National Park.As with all the other books in this series you are left eagerly looking forward to the next installment. I heartily recommend this to anyone who likes a good adventure.
Another really good Kurt Hunter story and a surprise at the end! We not only have another crime to solve, Martinez to deal with and more interaction with Allie and Justine and we get a surprise too!!!
Well. Did it again only this time it’s only 1:10 am. Wow action packed fast moving easy read. Ya gotta love or hate Susan. Love the ending.
Interesting story, lots of boating and diving. Holds your interest as our hero avoids his boss and tries to do his job, plus solve mystery of a bridge collapse.
