This book to me is very special because, it shows us Amy Winehouse before she became a superstar and before the success of 'Back to Black'. This book captures the real Amy Winehouse that is known and loved by all who knew her. Rest in Peace Amy.

Purchased this after getting Mr. Moriarity's first instalment, 'Before Frank,' and was not disappointed in the slightest! The book itself is beautifully done and offers interesting stories paired with iconic images of Amy Winehouse. I strongly recommend this book. 10/10

In Back to Amy Charles Moriarty has shared something immensely personal, photos from 2 shoots he did with Amy Winehouse before the release of her first album. He released them, in part, on the request of her friends to show the real Amy. These are shoots they did wandering the streets of New York and London as test shoots for her first album cover and capture her before she was catapulted into the spotlight. I believe this is a real boon for fans and that for those trying to understand her life they provide an unscripted close up view, neither completely raw, nor polished, posed, detached. It was a moment in time at the beginning of both of their careers when they were kids feeling their way. The 4 star rating reflects more my connection to the material. I didn't know her work, despite being in radio at the time of her ascent. I picked it up to try to get a better understanding, one not shaped by tabloids. I believe that for fans this could easily be a 5 star book. It is the kind of view seldom seen as studios, managers, handlers carefully pose, select, alter images to present a vision, a version they want to promote. This is not a carefully edited marketing package. Having grown up in New York city and wandered the same streets, visiting the same haunts, I know that he does a good job of capturing a scene and an era which no longer exists, swept clean by gentrification. For fans looking for a better understanding, a clearer, unclouded view, this ought to be a treasure. It is a very personal view, photos he held close for that very reason, released here for the first time.

I'm not an Amy Winehouse superfan, but I did enjoy some of her music. This book seemed interesting because Winehouse was interesting. If a decent amount of cultural popularity these days is rooted in being as brand generic as possible, Winehouse was definitely not that.First and foremost, this book is a compilation of not-quite-candid photography and recollections of Winehouse presented by those who knew her in conversational format. The photographs are Charles Moriarty's work. It's subjective, of course, but I find about half of the photos to be good, with about 10% to be striking in one way or another. Considering that the photos are selected for volume, rather than for a small, curated collection, it's not really a big surprise. The text paints a very human and approachable vignette of Winehouse.I think this is a good coffee table book for visitors to thumb through. It doesn't seem like this would be very satisfying for a superfan. The pictures just aren't consistently far up the photojournalism scale, in my opinion. The photos are also of a very narrow time in Winehouse's life - the plus side being that she looks vibrant, healthy, and happy.

"Back to Amy" by Charles Moriarty is a photoshoot collection taken before Amy Winehouse's debut album had come out but it was leading up to the release. Inserted here and there in the collection are interviews with people who were close to her such as her mother and band members.I wouldn't say that I'm an Amy Winehouse fan and to be honest, I nearly passed on selecting this book because of it. I'm glad that I didn't pass up on it because it is a beautiful book that reminds that Winehouse was a young woman full of talent and light. The photos here are of a talented woman (with insanely gorgeous skin!). The recollections are poignant, thoughtful. It is a beautiful celebration of a talented young woman and I'm really glad that I decided to take a look at this book. I think it would be worthwhile for any music fan to give it a look.

Back to Amy reveals the singer as she should be remembered, not of what she became all taken by the author, Charles Moriarity. The photographs show what a trendsetter Amy Winehouse was both in fashion and music. She went big in all ways, her voice, her hair, and her personality. Because she died so young, we will not know what she could have been. The photographs really show the inner Amy and they catch her in unguarded moments.Martin Belk gives context for a lot of the photos and Barney Hoskins (one of my favorite music authors) remembers her deftly. There are also interviews with people close to her that further illuminate her short life. I really enjoyed this book and even if you are not a fan, the photos are worthwhile artworks. It is a stunning book that looks great on your coffee table as well.

This is a simple, beautiful and heartbreaking book. It really is a coffee table book for the true Amy fan. The photos are from two different photo shoots and both of them are prior to the release of the Frank album. Both shoots are casual “practice “ shoots for future promos which is why they were previously unreleased. The photos are thus casual, unrehearsed and shows a lot of Amy with a glint in her eye and on the verge of giggle fits, a far cry from the lifeless, pinned eyes and stony stares that were common in all photographs from the last four years of her very brief life. Included are interviews with her mother, agents, etc but they offer nothing new that was not already out there, the real deal are the photos and the more pages you turn the sadder you will be.
