p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Geneva} LIZA JESSIE PETERSON has worked with incarcerated youth-both male and female-in various capacities for twenty years as a teaching artist, poet-in-residence, NYC Board of Education full-time GED teacher, re-entry specialist, outreach coordinator, and most recently as a program counselor with the NYC Department of Corrections. She appeared on two seasons of HBO's groundbreaking Def Poetry and was featured in Ava Duvernay's critically acclaimed film The 13th. Her one-woman stage play, The Peculiar Patriot, toured in more than thirty-five penitentiaries across the country and the full production premiered in New York at the National Black Theater in 2017 and received an Agnes Gund Art for Justice Fund grant. Liza is a writer, actress, speaker who lives in Brooklyn.

I am reading this book for a book club meeting at The East Orange Public Library in NJ. To tell the truth I wasn't too interested in reading it, simply because the subject matter didn't appeal to me & I didn't want to be sad...Anyway, I just started the book, on page 100 & can't put it down. Liza is a caring, real teacher & she keeps it 100. I love the way it's written, I enjoyed learning the history of the "N" word. Although I know the history regarding it, it's just the way it's broken down. I think everyone should read this book. It opens up your eyes. Liza Jessie Peterson is a friend in my head.
This book set my soul on fire with passion and love. As a Hispanic woman, student, and educator this book spoke to my soul on so many levels. Ms.P aka Sista Liza speaks the truth of what so many people are blinded to see about what is happening to our Black and Latino in this country. It is raw and it is real and that is why it is a must read for everyone! 10/10 highly recommend.
Total behind-the-scenes look at a fascinating subculture. Peterson writes in a very casual, street smart style. I worked in a prison, and I think this is one of the most realistic portrayals of the daily grind behind the walls.

As a special education teacher, I found Ms. P's story to be riveting. Her way of telling her story through her eyes and the eyes of her students was moving and real. I appreciated her authenticity. This is a must read!

This is an inspiring, beautiful and intimidating book. I am a middle-aged white woman who lives in rural America and this book shows a glimpse of another world that is so unlike mine that it was a bit intimidating. But it is a good thing. To hear about the suppression enforced by white supremacy over and over is sobering for it is something I can't really relate to (as I said I am a midd-elaged white woman), but I kept reading and I was blessed. Peterson's use of imagery is amazing. Her work and her story-telling are life-changing. At times this book seems very angry, but then she is quite vulnerable at other times. It is a great balance.I want to share something she wrote at the very end that explains her work with these incarcerated youth. She writes, 'There is something profoundly divine with each opportunity I am given to bear witness to a young person at their lowest point, at rock bottom, scared, confused, temporarily broken, and to be able to stand in the valley with them and speak life into their future, shining light on an otherwise false, dark vision."She sees the students she works with: their potentional, their hurts, their fears and she somehow can teach them and empathize with them without allowing them to take over. Peterson is an amazing woman, driven, a genius poet, an artist who changes her world.I need to share a few descriptions with you. About one of the staff members: "A sailor-mouth saloon type of broad with absolutely no filter, she serrves it to the kids straight no chase, rugged and raw. The sharp, symmetrical features of her beautiful face are a stark contrast to her snaggletooth gangster grill and profane tongue. Her densely silver-lined hair has earned her the moniker Grandma."About herself:"But when there is no more space in my body to contain the pain, when my cup runneth over with frustration and self-hatred and I still have to move throughout the world in order to 'earn' my place on the planet, the rage has to be released."Another neat thing about this book is the inclusion of word definitions -- words that are not typical of every day language, words that are unique to the environment she works in.And one last thing: there is a lot of profanity in the book. I know it is just part of the language, but some people might not like to read it. But you can just skip it and continue reading if it bothers you because this book is worth your time.
