Review

"I enjoyed this book. It has a punchy quality and is hard to put down. In Built to Suck, Jaffe prescribes the four best pills to prolong the life of your company." -PHILIP KOTLER, S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing,  Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University "Corporations suck, but commerce doesn’t have to. Other than scrapping business altogether and starting the economy all over again so that it serves real people, this is the best map to taking your company from here to there." -DOUGLAS RUSHKOFF, Founder, Laboratory of Digital Humanism and Professor of Media  Theory and Digital Economics, CUNY/Queens; Research Fellow, Institute for the Future"The Entrepreneurial Revolution is real. Joseph offers up a clear and accurate assessment of the current landscape and where its heading. There is a new world order and it's being run by startups!" -BARBARA CORCORAN, Founder of The Corcoran Group & Shark on hit TV show Shark Tank “Jaffe may feel at first like the High Sparrow of Paranoia. He is in fact Andy Grove 2.0 - a master provocateur on steroids. Strip away the raw and uncomfortable, and his core survival message is more painfully relevant than ever." -CHRIS BURGGRAEVE, former CMO AB InBev, founder Vicomte, author of Marketing is Finance is Business "With his inimitable style, Joe paints a dire picture for large companies…but then counters with a simple, pragmatic “four-pillar” antidote. I suggest you read on, and get to work on building your business on Joe's four pillars." -JIM STENGEL, author of Unleashing the Innovators and Grow, and former Global Marketing Officer, Procter & Gamble"Joseph Jaffe has done it again. This time, he has brilliantly demonstrated how companies' ages are just like people. Corporations must stay young, fit and agile – or face the outcomes of an early death. Thank you, Joe, for this fascinating perspective." -BOB LIODICE, CEO, Association of National Advertisers "Joseph Jaffe is no shrinking violet. He tells truth to power and calls out the turd on the table. He shoots straight, to the point, and between the eyes. Read this!"-RISHAD TOBACCOWALA, Chief Growth Officer, Publicis Groupe

If you haven't yet, read the headline of my review. Or re-read it just to make sure you got it.Some people use the acronym VUCA to describe the world we live in: a world that has become Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. They are right in my opinion.I've been reading management/marketing books and listening to management/marketing podcasts for longer than I care to remember. It's a passion and a hobby. But acquiring all that knowledge hasn't prevented me from running into huge business problems. While reading 'Built to Suck' I frequently caught myself thinking "if only I would have read AND applied Joseph Jaffe's advice in this book a few years ago, things would have been different".And that is the essence of this book. It identifies, in a rather direct and painful, but quite entertaining and regularly funny, way what is wrong with management (in corporations). And points you towards solutions.Shows you a way to deal with all of the shit (pardon my French) management is facing.Basically you have 3 or 4 options at this point:1. Don't buy this book and ignore it at your own peril2. Buy it, agree with it and continue doing things as you have in the past, expecting different results (i.e. insanity)3. Buy it, learn from it and just do it (mmm, I should try to sell that slogan to a brand)4. You might even get in touch with Joseph Jaffe and ask him to help you through the current storms. His newest agency (HMS Beagle) specializes in helping companies survive. Navigate the journey to survival, in his own words.Just to be clear: I have absolutely no business dealings with the author, nor with his company, am not a personal friend, but just an plain Belgian entrepreneur who regrets not having read this book and applied it's lessons in the past.
